TOURING.
From a VHS tape to a world tour.

In junior high, I watched Jamie Thomas’s Misled Youth—a skate film that hit like a lightning bolt. The music, the movement, the raw energy—it wasn’t just a soundtrack, it was the story. That was the moment. The spark. The reason I wanted to be part of music. I didn’t know how, just that I would.

A few years later, in high school, my identical twin brother Jared and I started a jazz duo: The Mattson 2. We played wherever we could. Then, in 2007, a last-minute tour in Japan changed everything. It wasn’t just a trip—it was the beginning. A career that would span 17 years, thousands of shows, and 14 countries. Japan became a second home—we’ve toured there over 20 times.

Japan wasn’t just about the shows—it was a full immersion. Learning slang from late-night izakaya conversations. Eating horse sashimi with a pint of Sapporo, chasing it with whatever the chef slid across the counter. Winding down in onsens, steam rising, neon flickering through fogged-up windows, embracing the ritual of it all. It was a rhythm, a language, a sound—and we made it our own.

Hitting Tower Records in Japan was its own kind of pilgrimage—digging through stacks of CDs and vinyl, discovering Yellow Magic Orchestra, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono like buried treasure. This was before Spotify, before Apple Music had their catalogs on DSPs. The only way to hear this music was to hold it in your hands, take it home, and let it change you.

Since then, the road has led to stages at Outside Lands, Blue Note Tokyo, Desert Daze—tours with Khruangbin, Toro Y Moi, Kikagaku Moyo, Antibalas, Badbadnotgood. 15+ albums, collaborations with Toro Y Moi, members of Tortoise, Cornelius. And in a strange, full-circle way, I’ve found myself working alongside skate legends I once idolized—Tony Alva, Tommy Guerrero, Ray Barbee. Even Neil Blender created our album artwork.

A VHS tape. A Japan tour. A lifetime in music. Some stories you write, others unfold exactly as they should.
